Guide: Laundry when there is a baby in the house – Introduction
Caring for a newborn is an incredible experience, but it is also often a source of anxiety and worry–if you are a mom, you know this. How many times have you asked yourself, am I doing the right thing? Am I choosing the right products?
Even the choice of a “trivial” laundry detergent can take on a different significance when there is a baby in the house: in fact, a newborn’s skin is more prone to irritation and there is an unintentional risk of damaging it.
In the first months of life, germs and bacteria can easily attack his still-fragile body, so it is crucial to keep everything that comes in contact with him clean.
However, chemical detergents and soaps should not be overdone. In fact, infants are more sensitive to too intense perfumes, and it often happens that residues of some products, probably too aggressive, settle on their skin causing annoying irritations in the long run.
Infants’ skin needs time to become stronger and more resilient. In the first months of life, in fact, the dermis is very thin and therefore more sensitive to everything that comes into contact with it. Recent research has shown that many allergies that broke out in adulthood actually developed during childhood, typically from 0 to 3 years of age. Therefore, it is very important to pay attention to skin health from the earliest months of life.
There are at least 3 good reasons why choosing the right products to protect a young skin, which turns out to be at least five times thinner than that of an adult, is critical:
In infants, the sebaceous glands, which are responsible for producing the fat that gives the skin proper protection, do not yet function as they do in adults, so their skin dries out much more easily
The skin of an adult generally has an acidic pH, which is responsible for resistance to external attacks, such as fungi or bacteria in general. In the first few weeks of life, however, the skin still has a neutral pH. Therefore, it is essential to pay attention to the hygiene of what surrounds an infant to protect him or her from external threats harmful to his or her health.
The delicacy of an infant’s skin is also due to the fact that its cells have yet to complete their formation and connection. At this “completion” stage, the skin is obviously more vulnerable: if a particularly aggressive external agent (such as some carcinogens contained in traditional laundry detergents) comes into contact with the infant’s skin and settles there (perhaps because some residue has been left on the freshly washed onesie) there is a risk that it could penetrate the skin and thus inside the infant’s body.
Therefore, when choosing baby products, it is important to prefer environmentally friendly and natural detergents over traditional ones: this is the safest choice, the only one that can protect the baby from annoying skin irritations.
But how to choose the most suitable products for our little one? The market is now increasingly rich in proposals, however, among which it is not always easy to navigate. Therefore, we thought of drafting a multi-part mini-guide to help all moms (and why not, dads too) recognize and choose the most suitable products for both the personal hygiene care of their newborn and the care of their laundry.
