Guide: Perfect Laundry – Part 2
As promised, we are ready to dispel some myths.
Let’s start by revealing 3 truths of laundry in the washing machine that perhaps aren’t so absolute after all….
Let’s start right away with the first truth: the program and temperature should be chosen first and foremost according to how dirty the clothes to be washed are.
Certainly the amount of dirt on the cloths is an important criterion-guidance. We don’t question that.
However, you must be very careful not to fall into the classic trap of “the higher the temperature, the cleaner and more sanitized the clothes will look,” a trap that will lead you to always choose the higher temperatures whenever your laundry seems particularly dirty.
First myth to dispel: high temperature, unfortunately, does not necessarily remove all stains more effectively, on the contrary!
In addition to the risk of irreparably damaging laundry (e.g., by stinging colors or making it easier for colors to transfer from one garment to another or even damaging fibers), water that is too hot can, in some cases, fix (rather than eliminate) certain types of stains on fabrics.
Indeed, while it is true that for some stains (such as grease stains) it is preferable to choose the highest possible temperature the fabric can withstand, for other types of stains (such as blood, coffee, or gravy) the opposite is absolutely true: that is, it is essential to use only cold water to remove the stain and instead prevent it from setting in the fabric’s textures. So always pay close attention to the type of dirt/stains you need to wash before deciding on the washing temperature! If you want to learn more, keep following us, we will address this specific topic in detail in one of the next articles.
Let us now address the second truth: only high temperatures really kill germs and bacteria.
A major concern-especially in recent times-is to eliminate possible bacteria on garments. Who has never wondered how many degrees really kill bacteria in the washing machine?
With certain garments (the most “classic” examples are underwear or bed sheets, the newer ones are garments that come in direct contact with external surfaces, a possible vehicle for bacteria), concerns about sanitation are so pressing that they become the sole criterion in choosing the washing program/temperature and lead to a preference for very high temperatures all the time because there is a widespread belief that the higher the washing temperature, the more effective it will be against germs and bacteria.
Again, think again because this is not entirely correct.
Many bacteria, unfortunately, are not eliminated simply by choosing a very high washing temperature. In fact, germs can lurk in the innermost parts of the washing machine, which by causing mold to proliferate make it more difficult to effectively sanitize laundry, even at high temperatures. It is therefore essential to perform constant maintenance on the innermost parts of the washing machine, such as the drum and seals, to ensure that they are always as clean as possible. Don’t worry, in future articles we will also tell you in more detail how to have a washing machine that is always in great condition!
Finally, let’s also debunk the third truth: to save energy (and thus follow a more sustainable lifestyle) it is necessary to always choose the lowest temperatures.
If you, too, are sensitive to environmental issues and are trying to change your laundry habits to minimize your impact on the environment, you may be driven to think that by always using the lowest wash temperature, you are sure to help reduce energy waste.
Sorry to disappoint you, but … this is not entirely true either.
Always choosing the lowest temperatures, without considering other factors such as the degree or type of dirt, risks making the washing less effective and may result in the need for double washing. Similarly, considering only the temperature and not the duration of the wash cycle risks consuming much more water perhaps unnecessarily. Or again, focusing only on the low wash temperature without worrying about the load, all caught up in differentiating between different fabrics, colors, etc. often results in an increase in the number of washes done at low load, a choice that is far from sustainable! Again, our advice is to always carefully consider all the different factors involved, perhaps foregoing wearing that particular item of clothing (even if you love it so much!) so as to wait until the washing machine load is really full.
Having dispelled these false myths, we want to reassure you that getting satisfactory laundry is easier than you might think: just use the right detergent (preferably eco-friendly!) in the right way!
Here’s how to do laundry the easy way, at the right temperature, with the GREEN PUFFER line, 100% natural, biodegradable eco-detergents that can thoroughly clean clothes and sanitize them at their best, whatever the temperature you choose and whatever the fabric composition of your garments.
The choice of program or temperature are not so important if you choose Green Puffer eco-detergents, their sanitizing action, in fact, is activated even at low temperatures thanks to the presence in the formula of natural ingredients whose antibacterial and antiseptic, as well as emollient and protective properties, were already known to our ancestors.
Indeed, in the biodegradable plant-based formula of Green Puffer eco-detergents we find ingredients such as:
- Neem oil, known in India by the name Arishta meaning “the tree capable of curing all diseases”
- thyme, an excellent disinfectant (also for the skin)
- Rosemary and sage, well-known natural antibacterial agents
In addition to these ingredients with well-known sanitizing properties, the biodegradable plant-based formula of Green Puffer eco-detergents also includes ingredients such as Aloe Barbadensis extract (which, thanks to its well-known emollient and healing properties, nourishes the fibers while nourishing the skin with which the fibers come into contact) and extract from the fruit of the Argan tree (Argania spinosa), which has moisturizing, nourishing, protective and regenerating properties for the fibers.
Finally, you’ll be pleased to know that the presence of Alpine Salt in the formula of Green Puffer Wash + Dust, as well as the addition of common table salt in the DIY mix of Green Puffer Wash + Soften exerts a natural cleaning action that helps keep your washing machine clean, preventing mold or the typical chemical residues associated with the most common traditional detergents on the market from forming inside.
Thanks to Green Puffer eco-detergents, whatever program or temperature you have chosen, your washing machine will be free of mold and chemical residues, and your clothes will always come out of the porthole clean and sanitized, in a completely natural way.
